Biotic factors are any living thing in an ecosystem. Remember "bio" means LIFE. Biotic factors can be "alive" or "dead." This means that something is biotic if it was EVER made of one or more cells and EVER had DNA in those cells.

Biotic Factors

Abiotic factors are all of the nonliving things in an ecosystem. "A-" means "not" and -BIO means "life." This means that all of the things that WERE NEVER ALIVE, made of cells, and never had DNA are abiotic. These rocks are an example.
