An airbag is a vehicle safety device. It is an occupant restraint system consisting of a flexible fabric envelope or cushion designed to inflate rapidly during an automobile collision. An airbag is effective in reducing occupant's injury during collision because it _______the amount of force by increasing the time interval over which it acts.

Catching the Egg Challenge
Guidelines

  • Two of students will compete against each other in catching the egg at three different levels.

  • The studentswho can successfully do the challenge at the end of the level win be declared the winner.

Experiment 4
Egg Drop Challenge

11

Objectives:
1. Create an egg case/vehicle that can protect the egg from cracking or breaking when dropped from a high fall using limited materials.
2. Calculate the force of impact that received by the egg when it hits the ground.

12

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
PROCEDURES (PART A)

  1. Choose a partner or form a group of 3 members ( 1 minute).

  2. Use your egg case/vehicle design yesterday and discuss with your partner/groupmates which design is the best in protecting the egg. (3 minutes)

13

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
PROCEDURES (PART A)

  1. Create an egg case/vehicle that can protect the egg when dropped from a high fall. Use ONLY the following materials in turning your egg case design into a reality: (20 minutes)

1 sheet of construction paper, 1 foot long nylon string, 4 sheets of paper towels, 2 feet long masking tape, 4 pcs. of plastic straws, 1 pc. raw egg, 1 pc. paper bag.

(You may or you may not use all the materials provided)

14

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
PROCEDURES (PART B)

  1. Before dropping the egg case, make sure to get the mass of it. Express your mass in kilograms. Record this mass on your worksheet.

  2. During the dropping of the egg, members of the group should record the time when the egg case reaches the ground. Write this time (in seconds) on your worksheet.

15

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
PROCEDURES (PART B)

  1. Record all the necessary data on your worksheet such as the mass, time of fall, initial velocity. Compute the final velocity using one of the basic kinematic equation and calculate the force of impact received by your egg as it strikes the ground.

16

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
PROCEDURES (PART B)

  1. Answer the application part and be ready for the sharing.

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
RUBRICS

5 points - If the egg did not break
4 points - If the egg did not break but has visible cracks.
3 points - If the egg breaks showing some albumen.
2 points - If the egg breaks completely

0 point - If you did not participate in the experiment

An extra credit of 2 points will be awarded to students who brought egg for this experiment.

Experiment 4: Egg Drop Challenge
TIME ALLOTMENT

  1. Choosing of groupmates - 1 minute

  2. Discussion of best design - 3 minutes

  3. Creating the egg case - 20 minutes

  4. Dropping the egg - 10 minutes

  5. Answering your worksheet - 10 minutes
