How to Tell Time

The short one for the HOUR

The long one for the MINUTE

This is an analog clock that has three hands

​If there is a 3rd hand (usually very skinny and red) it is the second hand.

**Hint - this one moves much faster than the others.

The short hand tells the hour.

Here the short hand is pointed to the 12, so it is 12 o'clock

What HOUR is it?

The short hand is pointed to the 3, that makes it 3 o'clock

What if the short hand is inbetween?

When the short hand is between hours, it the hour that it was last on. Here it is between the 5 and 6, because it is not on the 6 yet, it is still 5 o'clock with minutes added.

Minute Hand

The long hand counts the minutes.

The minute hand is on the 12

When the minute hand is on the 12 that means that it is starting a new hour. Here the minute hand is on the 12 and the hour hand is on the 3, so it is 3 o'clock.

Minute Numbers

skip count by 5

Each time the long hand reaches a number, you skip count by 5. Here the long hand is on the 1, so it is 5 minutes, the time is 3:05.

What time is it?

Skip count by 5s. 5 for the 1, 10 for the 2, 15 for the 3, and so on.

Look at this clock. The short hand (hour hand) is at the 3, and the long hand (minute hand) is at the 2. This means that it is 3:10.

How do you read a clock?

• Look at the short hand first, this tells you the hour

• Look at the long hand second, this tells you the minutes

• When the short hand is between hours, the time is always the hour it left, not the hour its going to.

What about when people say things like "10 till" or "a quarter past"??

This means the time is exactly "on the hour"

Similar to a Whole number.

Ex: 3:00, 5:00, 10:00

​When people say "past" the hour, they mean the last full hour.
Ex: Half past 2 = 2:30

​Ex: a Quarter after 6

​Ex: a Quarter til 6

​After/past = after the last full hour
Til = until the next full hour
