What is the skin?

●The skin is the outermost

layer of the body covering every

square inch of the body.This is

called the integumentary system.

(integument means covering).

●The skin has different

structures within it

including hair, nails, and

glans.

What are the functions of the skin?

The functions of the skin are…

●The skin acts as a “protective membrane” over the body,
acting as a shield for deeper tissues of the body against
pathogens, extreme loss of water, heat, and salts.

●The skin also has two type of glands. Sebaceous glands
and sweat glands. The sebaceous glands produce an oily
secretion called sebum, and the sweat glands produce
sweat.

●And the third is the nerve fibers in your skin that picks
up on pain, temperature, pressure, and touch.

● Outermost layer is the epidermis.

● Middle layer is The dermis.

● The innermost layer is the

subcutaneous layer.
