Multiple Choice

Read the passage. "A biome is a type of environment that is defined by the types of organisms that live there. We can also think of these as life zones ("bio" means life). Dividing land up in this way lets us talk about areas that are similar, even if they’re on different continents. But depending on whom you talk to, the way we divide up the world into separate biomes differs."

According to the paragraph, what is the definition of a “biome”?

1

A special building that humans build to live in that has plants in it

2

A type of environment that is defined by the types of organisms that live there.

3

Different continents around the world.

Match

Question image

How well do you know the globe? Match the regions of the Earth to the definition. Use the map and the key.

Where is the North Pole?

Where is the South Pole?

Where is the equator?

Where are the coldest areas of the Earth?

Where are the warmest areas of the Earth?

At the top of the map

At the bottom of the map

At the center of the map

At the North and South poles

Nearest to the equator

Match

Question image

Where are the biomes? Match the name of the biome with its location. Use the map and the key.

Which biome is closest to the North Pole?

Which biome is ONLY found in South America, Africa, and Southeast/East Asia?

Which biome forms most of southern Canada and Russia?

Which biome do we live in here in Georgia?

Tundra

Tropical Rain Forest

Taiga

Temperate Forest

Look at the forest in the picture, covered in snow. This forest is called a temperate forest biome. It has a winter season, often with snow.

Now look at the green forest. It is called a tropical rainforest biome. They are too warm to get snow.

How Different is Different?
Read the passage and answer the question on the next slide.

If we take a closer look at these temperate and rain forests, we see that they differ quite a bit in the amount of rain they get and in their temperatures. Tropical rainforests are warm and don't experience a winter season. But temperate forests have a defined winter, with snow and temperatures below zero.

With those cold temperatures, the plants and animals in temperate rainforests have to have adaptations to deal with cold weather.

3D Viewer Field Trip

On the next slide, click on the website to open a 3D viewer to do a virtual tour of 2 biomes (Desert, Rainforest, or Temperate Forest). Click the “View with Computer” button to open the tour, then click and drag with the mouse to explore. Spend at least 3 minutes looking through two biomes. Then answer the questions.

Think of 1 of the biomes you viewed in 3D. What types of animal adaptations helped them survive in that biome?
