Imagine a bunch of people enter a store to do some shopping, but they all leave it with their hands empty. You may doubt what they are doing, but they are actually doing something meaningful here—they are helping refugees.
Choose Love, a popup store opening on an irregular basis in London and New York, is an extraordinary store of its kind. The owner of the store is a United Kingdombased charity. Its slogan is “Shop your heart out, leave with nothing, and feel the love.” Its goal is to work on the serious refugee crisis facing the world. At the beginning of its operation, enthusiastic volunteers actively got involved and devoted themselves to raising awareness of the refugee crisis.

Unlike many stores where people shop for themselves, Choose Love sells gifts for underprivileged refugees. It urges buyers to think through how to satisfy the demands of less fortunate people instead of simply their own. Thanks to the store, people, by making purchases, are able to convey their love and genuine concern for refugees who are in need of help. In fact, according to a report, Choose Love raised 750 thousand pounds in 2017. These donations helped many refugees have a better future than they could have afforded on their own. Choose Love became a model for this kind of organization, and more and more charities began to take part in helping refugees.

The items featured in the Choose Love store demonstrate the different needs refugees have. Fleeing their countries, refugees who suffer from persecution dream of a new home. When they arrive at another country’s borders, they are often struggling for daytoday survival. They will be seeking immediate shelter and looking for food, clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags. These will protect them from the chill at night and make their living conditions in refugee camps more comfortable. But their needs don’t end there; they require other necessities for everyday life. Therefore, the store also provides products such as lamps and meal ingredients to cater to these refugees after they leave the camps and find a place to settle in a foreign country.

Aside from legal services and medical care, the store offers products to help them adapt to their new countries. Dictionaries, computer equipment, and school bags are displayed in the store. These are for the refugees who have started learning the local languages.
As the number of refugees is still on the increase, no one should overlook the crisis. Choose Love has allowed people to better understand what a refugee’s life is like, and it has also passed a positive message on to the public: Every little bit helps. The customers choose to make a friendly gesture and to shop for refugees rather than for themselves. Many other charitable organizations have also been making efforts to help refugees. Hopefully, with such aid, the people who are forced to abandon their countries can feel at home in their new land.
