HOW DOES ONE SPEAK IN
THE PAST TENSE IN
FRENCH?
3
To conjugate most verbs in the past tense,
you use the verb avoir conjugated in the
present tense plus a past participle.

Je parle au téléphone maintenant.
Past tense
I talked on the telephone yesterday.
J’ai parlé au téléphone hier.
Avoir
past participle of parler

The past tense in French is
called the passé composé.
To create the passé composé, you must use avoir in the present
and add the past participle of the verb that is the action.
Avoir au présent

Tu as vous avez + past participle= passé
Il a ils ont composé
Elle a elles ont

To make the verb negative in the passé
composé, you use ne….pas.
You make the helping verb negative, not the past
participle. To do this put the ne in front of avoir and
pas after avoir. The past participle is then outside the
negative verb phrase.
Negative
Je n’ai pas regardé la télé
hier soir.
