CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
What is the essence of the circulatory system and how does it work?
2
The circulatory system, made up of the heart, blood vessels and blood acts to covey important materials such as oxygen and glucose to body cells through the pumping of blood by the heart through blood vessels.

4
Why does blood appear to be red?
BLOOD
5
Functions:
Transport important materials such as nutrients, gases, hormones, wastes etc.
Controls body temperature, pH and osmotic pressure - maintains homeostasis
Blood: The blood is a fluid medium through which important materials such as oxygen, glucose etc. are transported. The blood is red due to a pigment called hemoglobin in the red blood cells.
6
Multiple Choice
Which of the following does not form part of the circulatory system?
Heart
Arteries
kidney
blood
7
Blood
Composition
Plasma: Made up of 99% water, dissolved salts, sugar, proteins, waste materials.
Red blood cells: Contains iron rich pigment called Hemoglobin which makes blood red. Carries oxygen to cells.
Platelets: Comes in different shapes and helps in the clotting of blood.
White blood cells: Fewer than the red blood cell, they contain special features that helps destroy pathogens in the body.
8
Multiple Select
Which of the following statements are true about the blood plasma?
It forms about 95% of the whole blood in human
It helps blood to clot.
It is mainly made up of water
It contains materials such as nutrients, hormones, ions and wastes.
9
Multiple Select
Select all the blood vessels among the following?
Esophagus
Artery
Vein
Capillaries
10
Blood Vessels
Arteries: Carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to various body parts.
Veins: Brings oxygen-poor blood from body to the heart.
Capillaries: Very thin wall and allows exchange of Oxygen, Carbon-dioxide & glucose bettween cells and blood
11
Multiple Choice
Which composition of the blood carries oxygen through the body?
red blood cells
platelets
white blood cells
plasma
12
HEART
What are the functions of the heart?
13
Right heart pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs.
and has two chambers; Rights atrium-top and right ventricle-down.
Left heart pumps oxygenated blood to all part of the body and has two chambers; Left atrium-top and Left ventricle-down.
NB: The two parts are separated by a muscle called septum
Heart: A special organ that contracts and relaxes to pump blood through the blood vessels to all part of the body.
The heart has two partitions ;
1. Right heart (low-oxygen partition)
2. Left heart (oxygenated partition)
14
Multiple Select
Which of the following is/are true about valves.
The separate various chambers in the heart
Prevent the backflow of blood
They are found in arteries
The are found in veins
