What is an equation?
An Equation is a statement that states that two quantities are equal.
Equation | Not an equation |
|---|---|
2x = 12 | 3(x-5) + 6x |
3x - 5 = 22 | 2x + 1 |
3(x-4) = 2x + 11 | 5x |

Multiplication and division are inverse operations for each other. You use division to "undo" multiplication and multiplication to "undo" division.
Multiplication and Division
Addition and subtraction are inverse operations for each other. You use addition to "undo" subtraction and subtraction to "undo" addition.

Q.
Find the error in the problem.
Should have added 19 to -1.
Should have subtracted 3k instead of adding 3k to both sides.
Should have gotten k = 20 since two negatives make a positve.
There is no error.

What are like terms?
For example 6x-4+3-5x
Like terms are 6x-4+3-5x
The sign in front of the term is crucial!!!
Like terms are terms that have the same variables and raised to the same powers (same exponent)
30
How do we combine like terms?
For example 6x-4+3-5x
Like terms are 6x-4+3-5x
Add the terms 6x+(-5x)+(-4)+(+3)
The sign in front of the term is crucial!!!
Use circles, underlines, or a highlighter to identify like terms INCLUDING THE SIGN IN FRONT OF IT
Combine the terms by adding like terms together - DO NOT USE INVERSE OPERATIONS

For the problem 2(3x+1)
2 should be multiplied by 3x and 1
2(3x) means you multiply the numbers in front of the x
2 should then be multiplied by one
since 6x has an x in it and 2 does not they can't be added.
2(3x+1) = 6x+2

Steps to Solving a Multi-Step Equation
Fractions? Remove any fractions outside of any parentheses by multiplying by the denominator
Parentheses? Distribute
Is each side simplified? Combine like terms on each side (DO NOT use inverse operations)
Do I have variables on both sides of the equation? Get the the variables to one side using inverse operations. (You should have a one or two-step equation after this step)
Isolate the variable: add or subtract on both sides, then multiply or divide
