Alliteration

  • Definition- words with the same consonant sounds occurring close together. (Similar to a tongue twister.)

  • Example- The Wicked Witch of the West was watching me!

  • Definition: an exaggeration designed to emphasize

  • Example: Your suitcase weighs a ton!

Idiom

  • Definition- An idiom is a phrase or expression that is not meant to be taken literally, but is used to exaggerate a point.

  • Example- It's raining cats and dogs.

Onomatopoeia

  • Definition- a word that imitates or resembles the natural sound that it describes.

  • Examples- The cow mooed at the farmer.

Oxymoron

  • Definition- figures of speech that contain words that are completely opposite to one another- often two-word phrases

  • Examples- jumbo shrimp, deafening silence

Metaphor

  • Definition- describes something as something else. It is a comparison of two unlike things, but does not use the words "like" or "as". You are stating that one thing is the other thing.

  • Example- Her hair is silk.

  • Definition- Giving human qualities, feelings, actions, or characteristics to non-human objects

  • Example- The lonely lighthouse warned sailors of rocks along the shore.

  • Definition: A comparison of two unlike things using the words "like" or "as".
