Due to the high number of death in the indigenous

populations, the Europeans decided to start importing

slaves from West Africa. The conditions on the slave

ships were horrible. Many Africans would die before

they got to Latin America. In Latin America, African

slaves were forced to work on plantations and mines.

In South America, plantations made a lot of money thanks to African slave labor. Brazil

imported more slaves than any country in the world! The Portuguese used the slaves to

grow and sell sugarcane, their main source of income. In the Caribbean islands, the

Spanish imported African slaves to work on their massive sugar plantations.
