Simple View of Reading

  • Reading is composed of two factors: Decoding & Comprehension

  • Decoding: it is the process dependent partly on phonemic awareness that leads to word recognition 

    • Phonemes: the smallest unit of speech that help to distinguish one word from another through distinct sounds

    • Phonemic Awareness: the understanding that language is composed of  phonemes

  • Comprehension: the process by which the meaning of words are integrated into coherent sentence structures

  • Spelling: a representation of phonemes within a language that gives meaning to pronunciation sequences
