Clauses

Clauses are groups of words that contain a subject and a predicate.

Example: The cat (subject) sat on the mat (predicate).

Clauses are the building blocks of sentences.

media

4

Independent Clause

Independent clauses can stand alone as complete sentences because they express a complete thought.

Example: The sun was shining brightly.

media

Independent clauses make sense on their own and do not rely on other clauses to complete their meaning.

5

Dependent Clauses

Dependent clauses cannot stand alone as complete sentences because they do not express a complete thought.

Example: After the rain stopped.

Dependent clauses rely on independent clauses to form complete sentences and provide additional information.
