​Types of Writing- Overview

  • ​Narrative Writing- tells a story- can have descriptive PARTS with sensory details

  • ​Expository(Explanatory)/Informative Writing-explains a concept or informs us about a topic

  • ​Descriptive Writing-focuses on a topic with sensory detail

    • ​Ex: sight, taste, touch, smell, hear

    • ​Ex: poems, captions, small paragraphs about an event, person etc...

  • ​Argumentative Writing- Persuades or convinces a reader to agree with a point of view

Essay Format

The format for each type of writing can be largely the same.
Paragraph 1- Introduction- Tell the reader what you are going to writing about without too many details. (Save them for body paragraphs!) Ideally, answer the prompt succinctly in one sentence (thesis statement)

Paragraph 2, 3, 4- Body Paragraphs ToSeeC paragraphs that thoroughly explain your ideas

Paragraph 5- Conclusion- Reminds the reader of what you said you are going to write about with no new information

This is when you are asked to write something that informs the reader.
EX~ is the same "EX" in EXplain!

Opinion/Argumentative (Persuasion)

When you tell what YOU think about a topic, a character, or a story.
Three levels-
Opinion gives your opinion and tells why it's your opinion Argument gives your opinion and PROVES you are correct
Persuasion gives your opinion and tells the reader to agree with your opinion and DO something about it.

  • Writing that persuades

  • Example prompt: In recent years, music in languages other than English—including Spanish, Hindi, and Korean—has surged in popularity in the US. However, many radio stations still hesitate to play non-English tracks because they worry it might turn away listeners who don’t speak the language the song is in. Do you think US radio stations should play more non-English songs? Why or why not? Write an essay to support your opinion.
