Compound Sentences

An independent clause is a complete thought that can stand alone as a sentence.

A compound sentence combines two independent clauses into one sentence,
using a coordinating conjunction and a comma.

It was snowing, but we still had to go to school.

My hands were cold, so I put on some mittens.

I made some hot chocolate, and I put marshmallows on top.

Complex Sentences

A dependent clause has a subject and a verb. However, it has NO complete
thought. It needs an independent clause. Therefore, it is dependent on the
independent clause.

When you put a dependent clause and an independent clause together, you have a
complex sentence.

After the snow stopped falling, it quickly melted.

If you go outside, you could slip on the ice.

Unless it snows, we have a pep rally on Friday.
