What Are Contact Lenses?

• A small, thin, disc-shaped lens that sits directly on the surface of the eye, designed to correct vision problems or for cosmetic purposes (colored contacts)

• Soft contact lenses - Made of gel-like, flexible plastic, also known as hydrogel or silicone-hydrogel

  • 90% of contact lens wearers in the United States use soft lenses

Extended Wear, Specialty Lenses, & RGPs

Extended Wear (EW)

• Lenses worn for a continuous period (overnight or for multiple days or weeks) before removing

Rigid Gas Permeables
(RGPs)

• Require specialized fitting

• Made of a firm plastic that sits directly on the cornea

• For patients with refractive errors outside the ranges of soft lenses

• 1 pair can last for 1-2 years

Scleral lenses

• Require specialized fitting

• Made of a firm plastic that vaults over the cornea and rests on the sclera

• 1 pair can last for several years if properly maintained

Contact Lens Terms

• Modality - Contact Lens Wearing Schedule - tells you how long you can wear the same lens before needing to replace it with a new one

• Revenue box - the contact lens boxes patients purchase & receive as their order

  • We DO NOT have revenue boxes for sale in the office

• Contact lens trials - small sample boxes used in office for contact lens fittings- also given to patients who are waiting on an order

Most Used Modalities

• Dailies - insert new lenses every day, throw away at end of day

• Weeklies - insert and remove lenses daily, throw away lenses after 1 week

• Bi-Weeklies - insert and remove lenses daily, throw away lenses after 2 weeks

• Monthlies - insert and remove lenses daily, throw away lenses after 30 days

Contact Lens Fit

Refers to the type of refraction needed to correct near-vision, distance-vision, astigmatism, or a combination of both
