Steps to translate URL to IP address

  • User types URL (www.youtube.com) into web browser

  • DNS Server finds matching IP address

  • If IP not found, higher level DNS (larger list of DNS).

    • If still not found 404 error is returned

  • If IP address found, web browser sends request to the IP address so that web page is returned
