Gerund and Participle(DGHS)

1. Gerund

   • 동명사(gerund)는 '동사원형 -ing‘의 형태로, 동사를 명사처럼 사용하기 위한 것이며, 주로 '…하기, …하는 것' 등으로 해석된다.

• Driving in the rush hour is exhausting. 러시아워에 운전하는 것은 심신을 피곤하게 한다.

• One of my goals for this year is losing weight by 5 kilograms.

   올해 내 목표 중 하나는 체중을 5kg 빼는 것이다.

 

• John enjoys playing tennis for pleasure. John은 재미삼아 테니스 치는 것을 즐긴다.

• They kept me from entering the palace. 그들은 내가 그 궁전에 들어가는 것을 막았다.

​「전치사+동명사」의 관용적 용법

• by+동명사: ‘…함으로써’ 수단이나 방법을 나타냄

She makes money by selling clothes. 그녀는 옷을 팔아서 돈을 번다.

• on+동명사: ‘…하자마자’

On seeing the boy, she fell in love with him. 그 소년을 보자마자 그녀는 그와 사랑에 빠졌다.

• without+동명사: ‘…하지 않고’

He left home without saying a word. 그는 말 한 마디 하지 않고 집을 떠났다.

• in+동명사: ‘…할 때’, ‘…함에 있어서’

Be careful in delivering the goods. 그 상품들을 배달할 때 조심해라.

She is sorry for not having helped me.

그녀는 나를 돕지 않았던 것을 미안해한다.

동명사의 부정은 동명사 앞에 not이나 never

• I am ashamed of being lazy. 나는 게으른 것이 부끄럽다.

• I am ashamed of having been lazy. 나는 게을렀던 것이 부끄럽다.

동명사가 문장의 동사와 같은 때에 일어난 일이면, '동사원형 -ing'/

문장의 동사보다 더 이전에 일어난 일이면 「having+과거완료」

분사구문이란 분사가 접속사와 주어의 역할을 같이 하면서 구를 이끌고 그 구가 부사구가 되어 주절을 수식하는 것

Because  I  feel sick , I can’t accept the invitation.

                                                 아프기 때문에 나는 초대에 응할 수 없다.

                   ➜ Feeling sick , I can't accept the invitation. 

분사구문은 현재분사로 시작하는 것이 기본

분사구문은 보통 5가지 의미로 해석한다.

  <때> when, after, while, as 등의 의미

• Putting down my newspaper, I walked over to the window.

    신문을 내려놓은 후에, 나는 창문으로 걸어갔다.

➜ After[As]   I   put down my newspaper,  I  walked over to the window.

 

  <이유> because, as 등의 의미

• Not knowing what to say, I just kept smiling.

      뭐라고 말해야 할지 몰라서, 나는 그저 미소만 짓고 있었다.

➜ Because I didn’t know what to say, I just kept smiling.

<조건> if 등의 의미

• Turning to the left, you will find Gyeongbokgung. 왼쪽으로 돌면, 경복궁을 발견하게 될 것이다.

➜ If you  turn  to the left, you  will find  Gyeongbokgung.

  <양보> though, although 등의 의미

• Though sitting in the sun, I still feel cold. 비록 햇볕에 앉아 있지만, 나는 여전히 춥다.

➜ Though I sit in the sun, I still feel cold.

  <부대상황> 동시에 일어난 일 의미

• Smiling brightly, she went out of the room. 환하게 웃으면서 그녀는 방을 나갔다.

➜ While[As] she was smiling brightly, she went out of the room.

  <부대상황> 순차적으로 일어난 연속 동작 의미

• The train leaves Seoul at five, arriving in Mokpo just before nine.

    그 기차는 5시에 서울을 떠나서 9시 바로 전에 목포에 도착한다.

➜ The train leaves Seoul at five, and it arrives in Mokpo just before nine.
