Atomic Bomb
In August 1939, Albert Einstein wrote to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt to warn him that the Nazis were working on a new and powerful weapon: an atomic bomb. Einstein said these atomic bombs would create massive explosive energy by splitting atoms. In 1942 the government started the Manhattan Project. This was the code name given to the effort to build the atomic bomb. Thousands of scientist went to work at a top-secret lab in New Mexico.
