From Compliance to Curiosity

Making Learning Rigorous, Meaningful & Impactful

Tyanna Bailey-Traylor
Curriculum Director Candidate

2

The goal is not simply for students to know more.
The goal is for students to think more deeply, connect learning to their world, and use what they know to make an impact.

3

Learning Objective

By the end of this learning experience, participants will be able to:

Design a learning experience that moves students beyond recall by incorporating rigorous thinking, meaningful application, authentic engagement, and evidence of learning.

Success Criteria

I can...

  • Identify the difference between rigor and difficulty.

  • Identify the key words used for the first four levels of rigor

  • Using TEKs I can identify the level of rigor.

  • Develop questions that require students to use levels of application and analysis.

4

DO NOW: Think about the best teacher you ever had.

What made their teaching memorable?

5

Word Cloud

Using only one or two words, what made your teacher memorable?

6

The experiences we remember usually involve thinking, connection, relevance, challenge, or relationships. That's where we're going today.

7

What makes learning

rigorous, meaningful, and impactful?

8

RIGOROUS

I think deeply.

MEANINGFUL

I understand why it matters.

IMPACTFUL

I can use what I learned.

9

Let's Define Rigor

Difficulty asks:

"Was this hard?"

Rigor asks:

"What kind of thinking did this require?

10

Discuss with your partner the difference between difficult and rigourous.

11

Open Ended

What is the difference between difficult and rigorous?

12

Rigor isn't about giving students more work. It isn't about making directions confusing. And it certainly isn't about making students struggle unnecessarily.

Rigor is about increasing the quality and complexity of thinking.
