What are relative clauses?

Examples

  • I bought a new car that is very fast.

  • She lives in New York, which she likes very much.

  • I like the woman who lives next door.

  • I live in London, which has some amazing parks.

Why do we use relative clauses?

We can use relative clauses to join two English sentences, or to give more information about something.

e.g. I bought a new car. It is very fast. ---> I bought a new car that is very fast.
e.g. I live in London. It has amazing parks. ---> I live in London, which has amazing parks.

We use which for things, not people.

E.g. The toy which fell was Mya's toy.

We use who for people, not things.

E.g. The doctor who lives next to me has a young son.

Using that

That can be used with people and things.

e.g. The desk that we bought wasn't very good. (also correct: which)
