• Differentiate between any two of the five technologies highlighted

• Demonstrate the ability to apply one of the technologies in the teaching/learning process

• Recall definitions of the five technologies explored

• Examine the link between emerging technologies and the development of the education sector

According to (Rotolo D. Et. Al. 2015) an emerging technology is a radically novel and relatively fast-growing technology characterised by a certain degree of coherence persisting over time and with the potential to exert a considerable impact on the socio-economic domain.

A simpler definition states that emerging technologies refers to new and innovative technologies that are being developed or have recently been introduced to the market. (Utah Valley University, 2024)

Let us look at the definitions of five specific types of emerging technologies...

AI in education is the process of integrating and applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies within the classroom to enhance teaching and learning experiences.

Artificial Intelligence

Big data refers to extremely large and diverse collections of structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data that continues to grow exponentially over time.

A QR code is an array of black and white squares or pixels set in a grid that stores data for a machine to read.

The Internet of Things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects—“things”—that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet.

5G is the 5th generation mobile network. It is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices.
