Multiple Meanings in English
Understanding words with multiple meanings is crucial for effective communication, especially in ASL. ASL is a visual language where context and visual cues play a significant role. Misinterpreting a word can lead to confusion or miscommunication. For example, if someone is signing about their trip to the "bank" (financial institution), but the sign used is for the "riverbank," the entire message changes.
Moreover, grasping these nuances enhances overall language proficiency and enriches the students' ability to think critically about language. It encourages them to pay attention to context, which is an invaluable skill in both ASL and English.

Multiple Meanings in English
Over 40% of English words have multiple meanings
English is a rich and complex language with many words that have multiple meanings This can pose challenges for learners, because understanding the context is crucial for proper interpretation and translation.
4
Example 1: Bank
The word "bank" is a perfect illustration of multiple meanings. In one context, a "bank" refers to a financial institution where people deposit and withdraw money. In another context, a "bank" can mean the side of a river. For ASL students, distinguishing between these meanings is essential to ensure the correct sign is used. The sign for a financial bank involves fingerspelling "B-A-N-K" or using a sign that mimics the act of handling money, while the sign for a riverbank might involve indicating the flow of water and the land beside it.
5
Example 2: Bat
Another interesting example is the word "bat." This word can refer to a piece of sports equipment used in baseball or a nocturnal flying mammal. The context is key here: in a sports discussion, a "bat" would be associated with the equipment, while in a biology context, it would refer to the animal. In ASL, the sign for the sports bat involves a motion of holding and swinging the bat, while the sign for the animal involves mimicking the bat’s flying motion.

Example 3: Light
The word "light" can also have multiple meanings. It can refer to something that illuminates, like a lamp, or it can describe the weight of an object, meaning it is not heavy. In ASL, the sign for illumination involves a motion that represents the spreading of light, whereas the sign for light weight uses a different motion to convey the concept of being not heavy.
