The debate between the implementation of the learner and teacher approach has been a long-time battle in South African schools (See Liu et al., 2006; McCombs & Miller, 2007; McCombs & Whistler, 1997; Weimer, 2002; Weinberger & McCombs, 2001). In South Africa the teacher has been the central figure – “the one who has the knowledge and transmits that knowledge to the students, who simply memorize the information and later reproduce it on an exam – often without thinking about it” (King, 1993, p. 30). Considering that Markina and Garcia (2022, p 3) argue that teacher centred approach is a highly controlled practice with almost no room for creativity. Both approaches have their merits because they focus on placing students at the center of the learning process, aiming to enhance critical thinking skills. for the learner centered approach, learners are active in their learning and engage with each other, also students are provided with personalised learning with learners having their autonomy however its drawbacks includes lack of structure. Within the Teacher-centered approach, it offers expect guidance and clear objectives, however the approach is a one size fits all approach.
