Mirrored pairs, shifting letters and related numbers
2
In the question below there are two words. A letter can be moved or placed or added into the second word to make new and completely different words that are correctly spelt. All the other letters must remain in the same order and both new words must make sense.
Plain. unit
STEP 1
Take the first word and going through one letter at a time, work out which letter can be removed, whilst still leaving you with a correctly spelt word.
What options do we have?

Step 2
We can see that only the l or the i can be removed - leaving either pain or plan
Now we can take each of these and systematically work through the second words, placing the letter at different points to see if we can make a word - let's try 'l' first

Step 3
We can see that the only possible word which we knew was unlit - we can check this fairly easily as it can be used in a sentence 'the candle remained unlit'

STEP 2
You can remove the 'l' or the 'm' leaving either ream (500 sheets of paper) or real
Let's go systematically through both letters with the 2nd word

We have done lots of VR codes questions, but let's look briefly at a type of question mirrored pairs.
This doesn't follow the same strategy as our normal VR code questions
TOP TIP To spot these questions it can b helpful to notice if the letters at the opposite ends of the alphabet- in mirror pairs the alphabet is split evenly between the m and the n
AB is to ZY as CD is to....
12
Here A and Z are the first and last letters of the alphabet
B and Y are the 2nd and 2nd last letter of the alphabet
Therefore C is the 3rd letter of the alphabet so if we look at the 3rd letter from the end it is X
D is the 4th letter, so we if we look at the 4th letter from the end of the alphabet we can see it is W
Therefore the code would WX
AB is to ZY as CD is to....
13
Here B and E are the 2nd and fifth letters of the alphabet respectively, and Y and V are there MIRRORED PAIRS (2nd and 5th last)
Try and work out which letters in the alphabet are GH - can you find their mirrored pair?
BE is to YV as GH is to....
14
This is trickier as we have three letters and some are on the second half of the alphabet so it might be helpful to use the invisible mirror line between m and n. USing this depends on where the letter is in the alphabet, how close it is to the middle.
Let's think
S is 6 letters forward from the invisible line in the alphabet - so 6 letters back is ______(remember to count the m)
E is the fifth letter in from A so what is the fifth letter from the end?
W is the 4th letter from the end - so what is it's mirror?
DIG is to WRT as SEW is to
15
The three numbers in each group are related in the same way. Two groups have been completed for you. Find the rule that connects them and complete the third group members in the same way.
6 (18) 3 9 (36) 4 7 ( ? ) 5
Method One
1. Use both digits so that the resulting product is the middle number
You can combine in any way through the following
Add them
subtract them
multiply them together
divide them
Then you can do anything you like to acheive the right product - but this process must be the same for all three brackets!

6 (18) 3 9 (36) 4 7 ( ? ) 5
Using method one
Adding or subtracting won't work here - as 6 +3 = 9 or 6-3 = 3
Let's try multiplication
6 x 3 = 18
9 x 4 = 3 6
So therefore 7 x 5 = 35 which must be the correct answer.

6 (16) 4 9 (23) 5 7 ( ? ) 6
Method one in this situation won't work - so let's look at method two
Method 2
Start with one digit (either left or right) and perform an operation
either double/halve it
Then use the second digit for the second calculation to achieve the number in the middle.
In this instance the second method works
6 x 2 (double) = 12
12 + 4 = 16
What number must go in between 7 and 6?
9 x 2 = 18
18 + 5 = 23 YES

Multiple Choice
The three numbers in each group are related in some way. Two groups have been completed for you. Find the rule that connects them and complete the third group of numbers that completes them in the same way. Find the number to replace the question mark.
