Multiple Choice

Which arrhythmias are an appropriate indication for synchronized cardioversion in an unstable patient?

1

Sinus tachycardia

2

Ventricular fibrilllation

3

Atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response

4

First-degree AV block.

4

Multiple Choice

What is the primary purpose of synchronizing the cardioversion shock with the R-wave of the patient's ECG?

1

To reduce the risk of skin burns

2

To synchronize breathing with the shock delivery

3

To prevent delivering the shock during the T-wave

4

To ensure the shock is delivered at the correct energy level.

5

Fill in the Blank

Cardioversion is contraindicated in ____________ arrhythmias, which require immediate defibrillation instead.

6

Cardioversion

When to consider Cardioverting your Patient.

  1. Hemodynamically Unstable Tachyarrhythmias:

    • Signs of instability: Hypotension, altered mental status, signs of shock, chest pain, or heart failure.

    • Arrhythmias: These include supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), atrial fibrillation (AF) with rapid ventricular response, atrial flutter, and certain types of ventricular tachycardia (VT) with a pulse.

  2. Symptomatic Tachyarrhythmias:

    • When tachyarrhythmias cause significant symptoms but are not immediately life-threatening.

    • Symptoms can include palpitations, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, syncope, or significant fatigue.
