Matter

LO: SWBAT classify and describe matter based on
physical state and temperature.

DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly classify and
describe matter based on physical state and
temperature in at least 4 of 5 questions.

SCI.4.6A Classify and describe matter using observable physical properties, including temperature, mass, magnetism, relative density
(the ability to sink or float in water), and physical state (solid, liquid, gas);

What You Need

1) Build Background
Think about what forms fog
on a cold morning.

2) Respond
Read about three states of
matter and how they can
change. Write what you
learned.

3) Share
Think about the difference
between evaporation and
condensation. Explain what
you learned to a partner.

What are the three states of matter?

What is a physical state of matter?

A physical state is a form of matter such as a solid, a liquid,
or a gas. We can classify matter by its physical state. Classify
means to group objects based on like properties.

How can we describe the shape of a solid, liquid,
or gas?

Asolidkeeps its shape when placed in different sized containers.
Liquidsandgasestake the shape of their container. The shape of

Why does matter change state?

High and low temperatures cause matter to change state.
Heating a solid can cause it to melt into a liquid. Cooling a
liquid can cause it to freeze into a solid.

What causes water to change from liquid to gas?

Heat causes liquid water to
change into water vapor.
When water boils or
evaporates, it changes
from a liquid to an invisible
gas. Evaporation is a slow
change from liquid to gas.

What causes gas to become liquid?

When water vapor gets cold, it condenses to its liquid form.
Condensation is the change from gas to liquid.
