Vocabulary
1.Biome
a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major
habitat.
2.Desert
a barren area of land where little precipitation occurs and, consequently, living
conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.
3.Tropical Rainforest
a forest of tall trees in a region of year-round warmth that receives heavy rainfall.
4.Deciduous Forest
a type of forest characterized by trees that shed their leaves seasonally, typically
found in temperate regions.
5.Taiga
a biome characterized by coniferous forests, often found in northern regions, with
cold winters and moderate precipitation
7
Vocabulary
6.Tundra
a cold, treeless biome found in polar regions or at high altitudes, characterized by
permafrost and low-growing vegetation.
7.Grassland
a large open area of country covered with grass, especially one used for grazing
animals.
8.Precipitation
any form of water, liquid or solid, that falls from clouds and reaches the ground,
including rain, snow, sleet, and hail.
9.Climate
the long-term pattern of weather in a particular area, including temperature,
humidity, and precipitation.
10.Latitude
the measurement of distance north or south of the Equator, often affecting climate
and biome distribution.

Learning Target
I can identify and label the biome by its climatograph.
I can identify grassland characterisitics and adaptation for
animals and plant
SEV1. Obtain, evaluate, and
communicate information to investigate
the flow of energy and cycling of matter
within an ecosystem.
a. d. Evaluate claims, evidence, and
reasoning of the relationship between
the physical factors (e.g., insolation,
proximity to coastline, topography) and
organismal adaptations within terrestrial
biomes.
10
Why do we identify biomes by its climate?
This symbol means its a HOT question. HOT stands for Higher Order Thinking. It’s a question to keep in mind throughout the
lesson. Don’t worry if you can’t answer it at the beginning of the lesson - you should be able to answer it by the end though
11
Climate
We organize our lives by knowing the weather and climate of
our local area.
How do scientists measure climate?
12
Open Ended
Scientists claim that cimate is consistent in regions of the planet what evidence supports this claim
13
Climate
This is a climatograph of Atlanta Georgia.
Do you see the
temperature, precipitation and time(12months)?
We see the weather channel give
us the weather everyday, and
they keep records of this
temperatures year-round called a
climatograph
14
We shall share all the biomes
climatograph, can you guess
this one?

Grasslands are known by different names across the world

May through July would be a
Drought Flood Monsoon rainstorm
22
Multiple Choice
What does the May through July precipitation tell us about the grassland climate/weather
It is a flood
It is a drought
tropical rainstorm
nothing is wrong
23
Savannah
Sparse trees
Grass and low shrubs
24
Prairies-America
Like Savannah, but because of the forests nearby huge fires
burn forests.
Do you know any Fireman in Prairie country?

Grassland adaptations-plants
•Grasslands are susceptible to fires, but plants have
strong roots that allow them to survive and sprout
again. Their soft stems also bend in the wind instead of
breaking. Other adaptations include:
•Long, narrow leaves: These leaves don't require much
water.
•Dormancy: Plants can stop growing leaves, seeds, and
roots until spring.
•Pollination: Some grasses and bushes have attractive
blossoms that attract insects for pollination.
26
Grassland animals adaptations
●
Animals in the grassland
biome have many
adaptations that help them
survive in this unique
environment:
•
Camouflage
•Many grassland animals have
tan or striped fur that helps
them blend in with the
grasses and hide from
predators. They may also use
camouflage to stalk their
prey.
•
Burrowing
•Some animals, like bison,
have front legs and paws that
allow them to burrow into
the ground to hide from
predators and escape the hot
sun.
•
Social behavior
•Grassland animals often live
in social groups to help them
find food, raise young, and
watch for predators.
•
Digestive systems
•Herbivores have evolved
digestive systems that allow
them to survive on
grasses. For example, bison
have broad, flat-topped
teeth.
•
Other adaptations
•
Other adaptations include
hooves for running on plains,
strong claws that can be
withdrawn inside their toes,
eyes on the sides of their
heads, and enzymes for
digesting grasses
27
Which adaptations for animals would not be found in a
grassland biome?
digestive tract
for eating grass
camouflage for blending in with the grass
short roots to avoid permafrost
herd social behavior
28
Categorize
herbivores with digestive tracts for grass
low growing roots to avoid permafrost
succulants for water conservation waxy thick protection from the sun
anaimals adapted to obtain water from seeds and other foods
thick double layer of fur
long roots to grow back after a fire
Organize these options into the right categories
29
Which adaptations for animals would not be
found in a grassland biome?
short roots to avoid permafrost
Moss and Lichen are found in
the Tundra-short to no roots
