DESIGN A MISSION

STATEMENT

• Purpose and values by which an individual or institution lives and

works

• Provides direction

• Sets goals

• The mission statement often becomes the cultural pulse of the

organization.

Once you are on the job, a mission statement allows you
to communicate to clients who you are and why you are
different; provides the basis for all business decisions;
helps motivate you to be better than your daily trials and
circumstances; and adds a level of professionalism to
your work. A mission statement can be equally motivating
while you are in school, helping to ground you and keep
you energized if exhaustion or doubt threatens to set in.

SET LONG-TERM AND
SHORT-TERM GOALS

•GOAL SETTING is the identification of long-term

and short-term goals.

•SHORT-TERM GOALS can usually be

accomplished in a year or less.

•LONG-TERM GOALS are measured in larger

increments of time, such as two, five, or ten

years– or even longer. An example is “to slowly

grow the company into broader international

markets.”

Decide on the short-term goals you wish to accomplish in a year
or less and the long-term goals for larger sections of time, such as
5 or 10 years, or even longer. Once you have organized your
thinking around your goals, write them down in “Short-Term” and
“Long-Term” columns. Then divide each set of goals into workable
segments.
