1

SOME VS ANY

  • 'some' followed by singular thing= unknown thing.

Example: Wilson just take some paper in the stack of papers in the drawer.

  • 'some' is used in (+) / request / offer sentences. While 'any' is used in (-) / (?) sentences, sometimes we may find 'any' in (+) sentences, which mean ' yang mana aja'.

Quantifiers

3

EITHER vs NEITHER

1) Either / Neither + singular noun

a) Neither player was allowed to return to the game after the argument.

b) A. There are two keys here. Which will open the office? B. I believe either key works.

2) Either/ Neither + of + Pronoun

a) Neither of us expected to be fired.

b) I don’t think he is going to invite either of us.

3) Neither of + determiner + plural noun

Neither of our cars has enough petrol so we have to take the bus.

Neither..nor.../ Either ...or......= the verbs agree with 2nd subject.

Neither John nor Fred likes doing the dishes.

4

Difference between NO and NONE

  • NO  IS AN ARTICLE - it goes before a noun. While NONE IS A PRONOUN -it goes alone.

  • Examples of NO :

There is no sugar = There isn't any sugar.

  • None = No + noun. Examples of NONE:

He has two cars and I have none (= no cars).

  • NONE + of + determiner (the, my, this...)We always use NONE before OF:

    - None of the books is interesting

    - None of my friends knows it

    - None of us speaks French

In english we divide nouns in:

.

.

.

  1. Countable: nouns that can be counted and have a plural form.

  2. Uncountable: nouns that can not be counted and don't have a plural form.

A noun can be "countable" in spanish like "pan" but uncountable in english.

To use quantifiers we need to remember that...

Quantifiers with Count and Uncount Nouns

14

media

We do not normally use the quantifier some in negative and interrogative sentences. We normally use any:

  • Do you have any children?

  • Did you see any friends?

  • We don't have any children.

  • I didn't see any friends.

  • We saw some lions at the zoo, but we didn't see any tigers.

Some & Any

15

Some

  • The quantifier "some" is used with both countable and uncountable nouns to indicate an unspecified quantity.

  • When used with countable nouns, "some" suggests that the quantity is not large or specific. For example, "I need some apples for the pie" suggests that you need a few apples, but not a specific number.

16

  • When used with uncountable nouns, "some" suggests that the quantity is not precise but sufficient for the purpose. For example, "I'd like some water, please" suggests that you want a reasonable amount of water, but not an exact quantity.

  • Here are some more examples of how "some" can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns:

  • "Would you like some pizza?" (uncountable)

  • "Some of the students passed the test." (countable)

  • "I have some money in my wallet." (uncountable)
