Be Cyber Smart - Do the right thing storycards

I found a picture on the BBC website that
I want to use in a project I am making.
I haven’t checked to see if I can use it
but I want to add it to my work.

My brother made a song on his phone.
I found it and want to share it with my
friends. He doesn’t know I have found it.

I found a photo on a website that says their
photos can be downloaded and used but
not sold to other people. I would like to
print it and put it on my wall.

I found a new film on the Internet
which isn’t out to buy yet. It says I can
download it for free. I really want to
download and watch it.

I found a picture on the BBC website that
I want to use in a project I am making.
I haven’t checked to see if I can use it

The picture probably belongs to the BBC, if we want to use it for our own personal project then we need to check the type of license it has. We might have to tell people where we found the image otherwise.

My brother made a song on his phone.
I found it and want to share it with my
friends. He doesn’t know I have found it.

The song could belong to the performer or singer and the brother might just be doing a cover of an already famous song. to the brother so he is the owner of it. We should not be sharing the song with our friends without our brother's permission.

I found a photo on a website that says their
photos can be downloaded and used but
not sold to other people. I would like to
print it and put it on my wall.

This is a tricky one. As long as the website own the photo outright, then yes you can. Photos that can be downloaded willingly but not sold means that you can use them however you please as long as it is not for profit.

I found a new film on the Internet
which isn’t out to buy yet. It says I can
download it for free. I really want to
download and watch it.

If the website owns that film then yes but normally the film company own the film and the option to stream the movie for free is something called illegal piracy.

media

We cannot use anything online if it has been copyrighted. If we do use something that has been copyrighted as our own, we could get in trouble.

How do I find things online that I can use?

15

media

This means that they can be used by anyone online without needing to ask the creator first.
Let's look at how we can find these types of images.

We need to find images that have Creative Commons
