LO: SWBAT explain that materials can be combined
based on their physical properties to create or modify
objects and justify the selection of materials based on
their physical properties.
DOL: Given scenarios, SW correctly explain that materials
can be combined based on their physical properties to create
or modify objects in at least 4 of 5 questions.
3.6D Demonstrate that materials can be combined based on their physical properties to create or modify objects such as building a tower or adding clay to
sand to make a stronger brick and justify the selection of materials based on their physical properties.
SEPs: 3.1B, 3.1C, 3.2D, 3.4A

What do the wagons have in common?
What are the properties of the materials used to
make up each wagon?
Wagons are
useful tools
made of
different
materials.
Why do you think each material is used?

Matter
Anything that takes up
space and has mass;
can have different
properties
9
Physical Property
Something about an
object or material that
you can observe with
your senses
10
Mixture
A combination of two
or more different
substances in which
the substances keep
their identities and are
easily separated again
11
Combine
Join two or more
things into one unit

12
Justify
Give a good reason
for a choice
Why do
you make
that
choice?
I think this is the best
material because it is
strong and will last a
long time.
13
Material
The type of matter
that makes up an
object

PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
●Everything around us is made up of materials. When
we want to make something we need to choose the
best material for the job. Materials are used to build
everything in the world around us, from the glass in
our windows to the clothes that we wear.
●The property of a material is something about it
that we can measure, see or feel and helps us decide
whether or not it is the best material.
●The five most well known and used materials include:
metals, glass, plastics, wood, and fabrics.

METAL
What are some objects you use made
from these materials? Why is it the best
material for the job?
15
STRONG VS WEAK MATERIALS
●Some objects need to be very strong,
for instance a bridge that will carry
hundreds of cars at any one time.
●Metals such as steel are very strong, hard and
are often used for building durable items such
as bridges, buildings, pots and pans.
●A weak object will be made of
a material that easily bends,
breaks or stretches.
●Steel beams are so strong they are
often used to support very tall buildings
such as skyscrapers.
NEXT
●Jello is a very weak
material and will break up
easily- You would not
build a house with Jello!
BACK
16
FLEXIBLE VS RIGID MATERIALS
●Flexible materials can be characterized
by the ability to bend or compress easily
without cracking under normal conditions.
●String is an example of a long flexible
structure made from fibers twisted
together into a single strand. String is
used to tie, bind, or hang other objects.
●Rigid materials are difficult to bend
and do not change shape easily.
●We use wood to make tables and chairs
because wood is rigid and does not
bend easily.

17
WATERPROOF VS ABSORBENT MATERIALS
●Waterproof materials do not
let water through them.
●Raincoats, rubber gloves and tents
are examples waterproof items.
BACK
NEXT
●Absorbent materials soak up water.
●An absorbent material has small holes in it.
When a liquid, such as water, comes into
contact with a material with tiny holes in, the
liquid is drawn into the tiny holes.
●We wear waterproof materials when we
want to stay dry from the rain.
●Materials such as sponges and tissues
paper are absorbent. We often use
tissues to clean up spills we make.
18
HARD VS SOFT MATERIALS
●A hard material is resistant to scratches
and permanent indentations. Hardness is
measured effectively as a material's
ability to withstand pressure or stress
(force over an area).
●The hardness of a material is measured
effectively as a material's ability to withstand
pressure stress (force over an area).
●If a material is soft -it can be
scratched easily by other materials.
●Soft minerals have weak bonds
between the atoms.

●Talc is a very ‘soft’ material and can be
scratched by other minerals easily.
●Diamonds are a very ‘hard’
mineral. They cannot be
scratched by other materials
and do not deform under
pressure. Diamonds are so
hard - they are often used in
drill bits.
