Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

Learning Intentions:
I am learning how to
evaluate expressions through substitution using given variables and numerical values.

media

Success Criteria:

  1. I can understand the concept of substituting values for variables in algebraic expressions.

  2. I can identify the variables and constants within an expression.

  3. I can perform the substitution accurately to evaluate the expression.

  4. I can recognize common mistakes when substituting values.

3

Why am I Learning About Evaluating Algebraic Expressions? When will use it?

Evaluating algebraic expressions is used in real life situations to calculate various quantities based on known variables, such as figuring out the total cost of groceries based on price per item, determining travel time based on distance and speed, calculating the area of a room, or even planning a budget by considering income and expenses, essentially translating real-world scenarios into mathematical expressions to find solutions.

6

Then simplify the expression using the order of operations

Step 2

Substitute the given number for the variable in the expression

Step 1

Let's follow the steps......

7

8

$0.20c + $0.90

Sports cards cost $0.20 per card, plus $0.90 for their box. How much would a box of 10 cards cost?

9

$0.20c + $0.90

1. Substitute a value for the variable.

2. Rewrite the new expression:

$0.20 x 10 + $0.90

3. Evaluate using Order of Operations.
