"If the game is baseball, he's playing soccer. He's wishy-washy, and what I mean by that is that he sometimes takes the easiest way out. He won't argue the point. Instead, he says, 'This is what the numbers say.' But he's pleasant and nice enough."

In this article we will examine the progression of the career and single-season games worked records. We will talk about some of the prominent umpires through major league history and how they fit into the sweep of history related to arbiters. Other aspects of the umpire world, including vacation substitutes and the size of crews, will be examined.

New York, says Baker, is where the rules were perfected and people first kept score. It's where the first true baseball stadiums were constructed and admission was charged, where the home run emerged, players became media stars, and trickery -- the stolen base, the bunt and other nefarious ploys -- entered the game.

The research on how boys and girls behave and learn in the classroom and online can be contradictory and controversial, though. Some studies and experts claim a clear distinction in the way boys and girls tackle academics, while others have found little or no difference.

I am the Marine veteran with sunglasses in the picture. That ceremony in Fenway Park [honoring Vietnam veterans and their families on the field before a baseball game] was one of the proudest moments in my life. The Boston Strong folks gave us a standing 20-minute ovation as we left the baseball field. I finally felt gratitude for serving that I had never felt before.

For many reasons, your Field Correspondent is elated by the return of minor league baseball games in 2021. After all, we spent many a pleasant evening writing about them during a career that included all-expense-paid trips to glamour spots like Shreveport, La., and Midland, Texas. Of course, in the typical minor league experience, the game itself ranks a distant third. First comes the besides-the-game experiences, usually referred to as promotions. Then comes the food, in enormous quantities, with no nutritional value at all (well, except maybe for those vegetables included in the hot dogs).

Although the Baseball Rule may have been justified at the time it was first established, its subsequent legal development, as well as recent changes in both the law of torts and the game of professional baseball itself have undermined courts' continued reliance on this antiquated doctrine. Indeed, considering that baseball teams are best positioned to protect their fans from errant flying objects, this Article has concluded that the time has come for courts to dispense with the Baseball Rule, and presumptively hold professional teams strictly liable for their fans' injuries, forcing teams to fully internalize the cost of the accidents their games produce.

The magnificent September sunset offered the perfect backdrop for the final game of a four-game series between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals. A cool northerly wind blew. Autumn had arrived, and the postseason was rapidly approaching. Although that breeze provided a momentary chill, the battle on the diamond--along with the sold-out ballpark and deafening noise--provided more than enough heat to stay warm. Looking overhead, beyond the reach of the stadium's light towers, the brightest stars in the sky were shining, just like the brightest stars in the ballpark below.
