States of Matter

States of Matter
State of Matter are a Physical Property.
The state of matter is a Physical Property because the actual substance doesn't change what it
is, only the form changes.
Mass - The amount of matter in an object has
Volume - Amount a space it take us
A state of matter is one of the distinct forms in which matter can exist.
Four states of matter are observable in everyday life:
●Solid
●Liquid
●Gas
●Plasma.
3
Solid
●Solids have a definite or fixed
shape and volume.
●Particles in a solid are tightly
packed and vibrate in place.
●They do not easily flow around
each other
●Solids have a fixed mass and
volume.
4
Liquids
●Liquids have a definite volume but
and NO definite shape or form.
○take the shape of their container.
●Particles in a liquid are close
together but can move around each
other.
●Liquids have a fixed mass but their
volume can change slightly with
temperature.
●In a liquid, the particles are already
close together, so it is not easily
compressed.
5
Gases
●Gases have no definite shape or volume.
○They expand to fill their container.
●Particles in a gas are far apart and move
freely.
○Most energy
●Gases have a fixed mass but their volume
changes easily with temperature and
pressure.
●When a gas is put under pressure by
reducing the volume of the container, the
space between particles is reduced and the
gas is compressed.
6
Plasma
●Plasma is not a common state of matter
here on Earth,
○ most common state of matter in the
universe.
●Plasma is a superheated matter where
atoms are ionized. It's the most common
state of matter in the universe.
●highly charged gas particles electrical
charges with extremely highest kinetic
energy(energy in motion).
●Plasma has mass and its volume is affected
by magnetic and electric fields.
7
Changes of States
●Matter can’t become something new
○Can only change its State (form).
●State of matter change due to Temperature.
○Delta
●Delta positive change adds heat
○Ice to melt to water
● Adding releasing or taking heat can change
●matter into a new
●Delta negative change removes heat
○ water becomes Ice.
