AI Bias

One of the issues students might encounter is bias. It’s
important to teach students to identify when a
response is biased. Types of bias may include:
Cultural bias: responses may include prejudices
or use stereotypical examples

Gender bias: responses may use more
stereotypical language when asked about women
than men

Selection bias: responses may be based on data
from only a specific group that was sampled

Confirmation bias: responses may tell the user
what it “thinks” the user wants to hear

AI Inaccuracies

In addition to biases, AI may sometimes produce
inaccurate information. These are referred to as
“hallucinations.” Some examples of AI hallucinations
include:
Google Gemini claimed that the James Webb
Space Telescope was able to take the first
pictures ever seen of a planet outside our solar
system (incorrect)

Microsoft Sydney claimed to have fallen in love
with users (not physically possible)

AI chatbots are notoriously terrible at word,
sentence, and character counts, often providing
inaccurate numbers when prompted.

Ethics and Safety in AI

Students need to understand limitations of AI and risks
involved with safety and privacy. Here are some talking
points:
AI Chatbots often store data and save
conversations. This information is reviewed to
improve the language models

Teachers must make sure to not upload any data
that would violate FERPA laws

AI models are trained on materials from the
internet and may provide source material to users
that is copyrighted or not licensed to distribute

Students may rely on AI to complete coursework
for them and pass it off as their own

AI in the Classroom

There are many ways AI can enhance
classroom learning. Here are some ways AI
can be helpful:

Spelling/Grammar Tools like Grammarly
can help students correct written work

Generative AI like ChatGPT or Google
Gemini can help students brainstorm or
plan projects

AI Tutors such as Spark can create
customized learning paths for students

AI in the Classroom

AI tools can also benefit teachers. Teachers
can use AI to:

create lesson plans based on state
standards

quickly create quizzes and assignments
for assessment

brainstorm new ideas for projects based
on lesson plans

give feedback on student assignments

My Take on AI in the Classroom

The technology landscape is constantly changing and teachers
must adapt to keep up. The reality is that students will use AI
whether we want them to or not. I believe it is better to teach
students to use AI tools responsibly and enable them to learn
digital skills that will be relevant for future careers.

Teachers can benefit from leveraging AI tools to help with lesson
planning and differentiation and students can use AI tools to
enhance their learning. The downside is that it may take more
work up front for teachers to determine new ways to assess
student learning when AI is used.

To sum it up, there are a lot of benefits to AI as long as it is used
responsibly.
