In many schools, gym class has been removed from the
school day. Some school leaders think gym is not a wise
use of time. They believe that students should spend
more minutes on math, science, reading, and writing.
These classes are very important. However, getting rid of
gym class is a poor idea for several reasons. Students
need gym just as much as they need other classes. In
fact, students who take gym may do better in their other
courses. Studies show that regular exercise improves
students’ learning, helps their health, and teaches them
to get along with others.
Excerpt from “Keep Gym Class in Schools” used with permission from HMH © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company
Gym class helps students in other ways as well. Moving
around keeps students healthy. It may even help them remain
that way later in life. Experts have found that people who are
active are sick less often than those who aren’t. Also, the
heart beats faster when someone walks, runs, or jumps rope.
Doctors report that this makes the heart stronger. Exercise
also makes the lungs work harder, which keeps them fit too.
Exercise builds strong muscles and bones. A strong body is
likely to be a healthy body. Scientists have even found a link
between exercising and being in a good mood.

Tommy's Speedy Ride
Tommy raced down the sidewalk
on his new blue bike. The wind
rushed through his hair as he
pedaled faster and faster. He
zoomed past the big oak tree and
waved to Mrs. Johnson working in
her garden. Tommy loved how his
bike gave him a thrilling feeling!
Betty's Seashore Adventure
Betty skipped along the beach,
collecting pretty shells in her
yellow bucket. The warm sand
tickled her toes as she searched
for treasure. She found a big pink
shell and showed it to her dog,
Buddy, who wagged his tail. Betty
thought the beach was the best
place for adventures!
