A strong topic sentence should introduce the main idea of the paragraph. It should not be too general or too specific. For example, if the paragraph is about how the government helps increase people’s happiness, this idea should be included in the topic sentence.

  • Singaporeans are generally happy. → weak topic sentence; too general

  • One reason Singaporeans are generally happy is that the government provides basic necessities, such as housing. → strong topic sentence

6

As another example, if the paragraph presents the argument that you don’t need a lot of money to be happy, this idea should be included in the topic sentence.

  • About 50 percent of Mexico’s citizens live in poverty. → weak topic sentence; too specific

  • Even though many people in Mexico live in poverty, overall reported happiness is still very high. → strong topic sentence

Key Features of a Strong Topic Sentence

  • Clearly states the main idea of the paragraph.

  • Specific but not too detailed.

  • Concise and to the point.

  • Engaging and uses active language.

15

Be Specific, But Not Too Detailed

Examples:

  • Too General: "Exercise is good for you."

  • Too Specific: "Running for 30 minutes every day will help reduce your risk of heart disease by 30%."

  • Just Right: "Regular exercise improves physical health and mental well-being."

16

Be Concise and Focused

  • Avoid long sentences that cover too many ideas.

  • Stick to one main point.

Example:

  • Weak: "Exercising is important because it improves your physical health, makes you feel happier, and also helps with socializing, which is why everyone should do it."

  • Strong: "Exercising regularly improves both physical and mental health."

17

Use Active and Clear Language

  • Avoid passive voice.

    • Be direct in your statements.

    Example:

    • Weak: "It is believed that reading is helpful for children's development."

    • Strong: "Reading helps children develop cognitive skills and creativity."

18

Don’t Make Announcements

  • Avoid starting sentences like:

    • "In this paragraph, I will discuss..."

    • "This paragraph will talk about..."

Example:

  • Weak: "In this paragraph, I will explain why recycling is important."

  • Strong: "Recycling is essential for protecting our environment and conserving natural resources."
