Using ParentSquare for
Communication
34
SLIDESMANIA.COM
YELLOW
BLACK
ParentSquare
●
HCS communication tool (i.e., divisonwide, individual schools, departments, teachers, and
staff)
●
Parent/guardian communication under one umbrella providing a “one stop shop” for
school communication
●
ParentSquare is available for staff and parents to use on their computers or mobile
devices
●
Families can receive alerts and information via email, text, phone, and app notifications
35
SLIDESMANIA.COM
YELLOW
BLACK
ParentSquare
●
ParentSquare automatically generates an account for each parent/guardian, using
the email address and phone number on file with their child’s school.
●
Parents/guardians do not need to activate a ParentSquare account in order to receive
division and school phone calls and email messages.
●
However, parents need to activate their accounts so they can download the mobile app
and update their preferences on when and how they are notified, as well as use other
features (e.g., access report cards).
36
SLIDESMANIA.COM
YELLOW
BLACK
MyVRSpot
Why do we need to use it?
●
YouTube’s “restricted mode” is not that restricted - many inappropriate things get
through its ineffective filter.
●
Students use YouTube as a distraction in class and it affects student engagement during
instruction.
●
Vimeo is blocked on the student accounts, but with this, you can use videos on that
platform.

What are we learning today?
(Learning Intentions)
To build a common language of lesson design within HCS,
learners will know the definitions of the following:
●
Essential Knowledge & Skills
●
Cognitive level
●
Learning Intentions
●
Success Criteria/Formative Assessment
●
Learning Experiences
41

How will we know you’ve “got it?”
(Success Criteria)
Learners will be able to:
●
Correctly match terms with examples.
*GROUP DISCUSSION: Why would we do this activity rather
than you just completing an exit ticket or similar?

What is Understanding by Design?
Do you think it’s…
A.
An approach to educational planning that focuses on
desired outcomes, and learning and then designing
learning experiences to achieve those outcomes?
B.
A method for designing and delivering curriculum and
instruction that’s focused more on student
understanding than content coverage?
C.
Something many HCS teachers already do, without
even realizing it?

Imagine you’ve just taught an amazing unit with great,
engaging lessons. Has either of these ever happened
to you?
A.
The afternoon before the test, you go to copy the unit assessment and realize with a
sinking feeling: you didn’t teach a couple of questions on the assessment.
B.
You give a CSA and realize that while you taught all the material, you never taught it the
way the questions are being asked and students struggle to answer.
Understanding by Design can help!

47
Stage 1: Identify Desired Results
Use the VDOE curriculum framework document to consider
the standards and the “big ideas”:
●
What are the desired results for students?
●
What do we want students to Know, Understand, and be
able to Do (KUDs)?
Also consider the W5Cs: Wellness, Critical Thinking, Creative
Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Citizenship
48
Power Standards are
based on the previous
year’s SOL results. Which
standards do we need to hit
harder?
Essential Questions and Understandings are
big-picture questions and ideas. We will come back to
these later.
49
●
Determine how KUDs will be assessed for mastery (summative
assessment).
●
Develop checks for understanding (formative assessment) for KUDs.
●
Develop the Learning Intentions.
●
Write sample Success Criteria for each Learning Intention
Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence
The work...
50
The cognitive level of the
standard is shown in this
section based on Bloom’s
Taxonomy .
Assessments are linked
here, with information
about which items cover
this standard.
51
●
Content mastery is not the aim of instruction, but a means.
●
Pay careful consideration to the understandings and the essential
questions
●
Learning Experience directly align with summative and formative
assessments
Stage 3: Learning Experiences
52
The learning experiences are in
the third section and should be
detailed yet simple enough for
any reader to understand the
expectations for classroom
lessons.
53
Lesson Critical Elements
54
Essential Knowledge and Skills
Can be found in the VDOE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK or SOLs.
Outlines both the CONTENT and cognitive level that must be taught for
each standard.

Remember: Retrieve relevant
information from long-term memory
Understand: Construct meaning
from messages (including oral,
written, and graphic)
Apply: Carry out or use a
procedure in a given situation
Analyze:Break material into parts
and determine how parts relate to
one another or overall structure
Evaluate: Make judgments based
on criteria and standards
Create:Put elements together to
form a new coherent or functional
whole; reorganize elements into a
new pattern or structure
60
Learning Intentions
What will students know, be able to do, or understand by the
end of the lesson?
Student-friendly language
Dependent on developmental needs of students
61
YELLOW
BLACK
Example: Grade 1
Mathematics
Learning Intention:
I can count to 100.
62
Success Criteria
STUDENTS use the Success Criteria to make JUDGEMENTS
about their WORK/LEARNING quality; what success “LOOKS
LIKE.”
63
YELLOW
BLACK
Example: Grade 1
Mathematics
Learning Intention: I can count to 100.
Success Criteria: I will count out loud from 0 to 100 with
little or no help from my teacher.
64
What are we doing today?
