​American Civil War and Abolition

  • 17th and 18th Century: slavery (mainly in the South)

    • South - Economic factor = plantations

    • North - Economic factor = industries

    • Slavery in America was based on Race and promoted unequal laws and biased attitudes

  • 1860s - The South seceded (left the country) over disagreements with the North on the issue of slavery

  • Civil War: two parts of the same country fight against citizens of their own country

  • 1865 - 13th Amendment: abolished slavery

    • Juneteenth = June 19, 1865 - the day the last community of enslaved people found out they were freed.
