Observing the Force
an electron beam tube can be used to demonstrate the magnetic force on moving charged particles.
3
Why is the electron moving up??
B is into the page.
Electron current to the left.
If we use Left-hand rule, the Force (motion) must be going down, right??
You trippin' bro!! We already know that, in the circuit the current is always going from the positive terminal to the negative terminal. So even though the electron moving to the left, the current is moving to the other direction (from right to left).
So the current finger (second finger) must direct to the right.
4
Open Ended
the figure here shows how radiation from a radioactive material passes through a region of uniform magnetic field. State and explain whether each type of radiation has a positive or negative charge, or is unchanged.
5
Magnetic Flux Density + Current Equation = new equation for a charged particle
So what is the equation of a magnetic force on a charged particle?
6
Open Ended
Use the clue from the previous slide to write the new equation of the magnetic force.
(hint: there will be B, F, q, v in the equation)
