1. The bad news is that more than half the weight of
certain sticks of gum is sugar. This can harm your
teeth. But the good news is that chewing gum can
help wash sugar and small bits of food into your
stomach. So chewing sugarless gum after a snack
can be helpful. And some scientists claim that,
besides helping you feel more calm and mellow,
chewing gum can help you feel more awake.

Alicia. First, she had Alicia use scissors to cut the
pieces out of the thick paper they were printed on.
Next, Alicia chose a piece of glass she liked and used

After the pieces were marked, Alicia and her mother
put on their safety glasses for the next step.

Making Connections!
A Lost Dog
Clara nervously posted another "Lost
Dog" flyer on the neighborhood
telephone pole, her hands shaking in
the cold wind. The streets seemed
endless and empty as she searched for
her golden retriever, Max. Just when
she felt most hopeless, a girl with curly
hair ran up to her, saying she had seen
a dog matching Max's description in
the park.
The Radio Project
Last summer, Farhan spent every
Saturday helping his grandfather
restore an old wooden radio they'd
found at a flea market. With each wire
they reconnected and every knob they
polished, Farhan learned not just
about electronics, but about his
grandfather's childhood in another
country. When they finally heard
music playing through the speakers,
Farhan had never felt more proud.

Both Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson took action because
they believed the colonies should be independent from British
rule. Paine believed "monarchy was a foolish way to run a
country" and wanted "a republic—a government made up of
elected representatives". Similarly, Jefferson wrote the
Declaration because "people in the colonies were unhappy" and
"did not have a say in their government". Both men used their
writing to support independence - Paine's work "convinced
many colonists" it was time for independence, while Jefferson
wrote the document that officially declared it.
