The Three Domains

Every single living organism will fall into one of these categories. I need a volunteer to pick any living thing that you know of. (It can be as crazy as you want, but it has to be a real live living thing.) We are going to look at how it is classified.

Eukarya
Eukarya is one of the domains of life. Organisms in the domain Eukarya have a more complex cell structure than bacteria or archaea. The domain Eukarya is divided into four kingdoms:
Protista
Plantae
Fungi
Animalia
These four kingdoms contain the living things you are most familiar with. A eukaryote is an organism that is part of the domain Eukarya.
Eukaryotes have a complex cell structure compared to bacteria and archaea.

Eukaryotic cells contain many structures that are surrounded by membranes. One of these structures is the nucleus. A nucleus is a structure within a cell that stores the cell's DNA. Recall that DNA contains information about how the cell will look and function. Every eukaryote contains cells with a nucleus.

Multicellular
The organisms in the Archaea and Bacteria domains are always unicellular, or composed of one cell. Some eukaryotes are also unicellular.
However, many eukaryotes are multicellular, or composed of many cells. The cells in a multicellular organism work together to keep it alive. Often, a multicellular organism has different types of cells that perform different jobs. This rockhopper penguin is multicellular.
All multicellular organisms are eukaryotes, but not all eukaryotes are multicellular.

Macroscopic
Recall that macroscopic means large enough to see with your eyes. Many eukaryotes are macroscopic. Macroscopic organisms include:
trees
bears
insects
mushrooms
This kelp, which grows in the ocean, is a macroscopic eukaryote.
All macroscopic organisms are eukaryotes, but not all eukaryotes are macroscopic.

Let's observe this slide under the microscope and begin to understand how cells are arranged within an animal!
