Singing is a full-body skill. You need more than just the muscles and vocal folds in your voice box. Along with using your voice box to create your voice, you need to manipulate other parts of your body to sing for long periods and hit certain pitches

The first main factor to accessing a great and strong singing voice is your posture.

Posture is the way you hold and carry your body.

When you carry your body with good posture, it allows your organs and other parts of your body to function well.

For a singer, it is important to have good posture to ensure that when breathing, the air is able to fully expand the lungs.

As a singer, you should try to maximize the amount of air you bring into your body so you can sing long phrases or notes.

A part of your body called the diaphragm needs to be manipulated for the lungs to expand to their full capacity for the purpose of singing.

Breathing for Singers

The diaphragm is a muscle divider that separates the muscles and organs in your chest from the organs in your abdomen. When you breathe air into your body, the diaphragm pushes the other organs down to give the lungs room to expand.

In your last lesson, you learned about the four common voice parts:

  • soprano

  • alto

  • tenor

  • bass

The soprano and alto voice parts are typically for women and for young singers, and tenor and bass are typically male voice parts. Remember that the soprano voice part is the highest voice part, and the bass is the lowest voice part.

What is your voice part?
