What is the Imperative

Definition:
The imperative is used to give commands, make requests, offer invitations, or give directions. It typically involves a direct action or instruction.

  • Examples:

    • "Close the door."

    • "Please sit down."

    • "Take the bus to the next stop."

Forms of Imperative Sentences

Imperative sentences typically have two forms:

  1. Positive Imperative ( using Verb 1 , Perintah )

    • Used to tell someone to do something.

    • Example: "Eat your vegetables."

  2. Negative Imperative ( larangan , Don't..... )

    • Used to tell someone not to do something.

    • Example: "Don't touch that!"

Structure of Imperative Sentences

  1. Basic Form:

    • Subject (usually implied, "you") is not stated.

    • Example: "Sit down." (The "you" is understood.)

  2. Negative Imperative:

    • "Do not" or "Don't" + base verb.

    • Example: "Don't be late."

    • Note: "Do" is used in negative imperatives for emphasis or formality.

Using Imperatives for Requests and Suggestion

  • Imperatives can be softened with words like please, kindly, or if you could.
    Example:

    • "Please pass the salt."

    • "Kindly close the window."

  • These are still technically commands, but they sound more polite.
