If you are over 14 and considering filling your time with a job, you might be able to! Discuss it with your caretaker to ensure it is a good fit for you and your family.

The steps to getting a job are:

  1. obtain a work permit;

  2. find a job; and

  3. complete a job application.

Note: Steps one and two are interchangeable. You can apply for a job with a work permit and start working as soon as they hire you. Or, you can apply for a job without one and get hired, but you can only begin working once you have a work permit.

Consider a job!

You must contact the administration office of the public school district where you live to obtain a work permit. They are responsible for issuing work permits regardless of whether or not you are a student in the school district. To complete a work permit, you will need the following:

  • to know any physical work restrictions you may have;

  • your address;

  • where you were born, along with your date of birth; and

  • evidence of your age.

While most applications will start with your personal information, the specific details and requirements of applications vary widely. For example, you will need to write essays about your life experience for a college application, but for a passport application, that is not needed.

A job application, or an employment application, is a form companies will ask all people applying for a job to fill out to help them find the best candidate for an open job position. It is your formal request to work for a company or organization.

Most job applications will have the same general requirements, but some may include additional sections or ask for specific information depending on the employer's needs.

Job applications typically include:

  • an applicant's personal information;

  • job details;

  • education;

  • work experience;

  • military service;

  • references; and

  • a disclaimer and signature.

This list might look similar to the one provided for a letter of recommendation. Often, they are the same, and that is okay! It is advised that you do not write family members as a reference because it might be viewed as biased.

You may recall that letters of recommendation are formal references where a paper is written about you and then given to colleges or jobs. However, a reference is more informal and includes the person's name and phone number.

A potential employer will call the reference to ask about skills, qualifications, work ethic, and character. They will confirm the information on the job application and what was said in the interview.

Taking the time to make sure a job application is filled out completely and honestly is an important step when applying for a job and securing an interview.

Many employers conduct background checks, reference checks, and verification of the information you provide. Dishonesty could harm your chances of being hired. Honesty on a job application will ensure a successful and honest relationship with the potential employer.
