The Drones in School Process

During the Drones in School season, you and your team will develop various skills related to engineering, design, marketing, project management, and operating your drone. Successful teams follow a continuous process that leads them through planning, designing, making, testing, and racing. (See the image on this page) This process is not intended to be linear or one step after another. Rather, as you work through issues and challenges, you and your team will circle back many times through this process.

6

The Drones in School Process

For example, your team will design a drone; you will make your drone design by creating a frame and assembling the various components. When you test your drone, it may not perform as expected. If your performance is less than desired, you will need to go back to the planning phase to evaluate what went wrong with your design. From there, you will probably decide to make some design changes, or perhaps you will make changes to the manufacturing process, or you may choose to change the components you are assembling. i.e., motors, flight controller, props, etc. Always keep in mind that as an operator of a racing team, you are never going to be “done “with your work.

7

The Drones in School Process

To be successful, you and your team will continually make improvements throughout the entire season. By documenting these improvements, you can create a quality portfolio and display to earn you more points at your next event.

Drones in School Job Roles

To enter the championship, you must assign job roles to the members of your group. Ideally, one role will be allocated to each person. However, if you have fewer than six team members, you will have to double up or share some roles and responsibilities. The members of your team should cover the following job roles:

9

Drones in School Job Roles

Project Manager

  • This person oversees the project management of all key deliverables and ensures that all equipment is ready for the competition. This includes organizing time, materials and equipment for completing all aspects of the project. The Project Manager will need to work with all members to ensure tasks are progressing on time and offer assistance as needed. The Project Manager also serves as the main point of contact for the team advisor and Drones in School personnel at all events.

10

Drones in School Job Roles

Marketing Coordinator

  • The Marketing Coordinator is responsible for developing and managing the team brand strategy. This includes overseeing fundraising campaigns and managing sponsor-team relationships. The Marketing Coordinator works closely with other team members to ensure materials and presentations align with the team brand. The Marketing Coordinator also oversees production of the team’s video presentation.

11

Drones in School Job Roles

Manufacturing Engineer

  • This person is responsible for advising team members on the manufacture of the drone and the constraints of the machining/manufacturing process. Manufacturing engineers will need to work with the design engineers to report and solve any problems with the construction of the drone and work with the drone technician to make repairs. The Manufacturing Engineer may also oversee the construction of the display booth.

12

Drones in School Job Roles

Design Engineer

  • This role is responsible for the styling and the aerodynamic performance of the drone and design of the display booth. Design engineers will need to work with the manufacturing engineer and drone technician to ensure these ideas can be realized, repaired and maintained.

13

Drones in School Job Roles

Graphic Designer

  • This person is responsible for producing the drone color scheme, team logo/identity, any special sponsorship logos, final graphic renderings and any additional team marketing materials. The graphic designer will need to work with all team members to coordinate the design and production of the display booth, portfolio, team uniform and video presentation.

14

Drones in School Job Roles

Drone Techician

  • This role is responsible for ensuring all components of the drone are installed and working properly. Drone Technicians are responsible for using the configuration software to adjust the flight operation of the drone. Drone Technicians must also ensure that all team members are following the correct operating procedures and protocols for setting, modifying and operating the camera and/or radio frequencies during an event.

15

Roles will change

Over the semester your roles will change and everyone will have a chance to have each of the roles.

Create a class motto

As a class split into small groups. Each group will look up what a motto is and the ones that are on the internet. Each group is to come up with a motto that will be presented to the class. Then the class will vote on the best motto.

What roles will need to be set up for this process. Some people might have more than one role.

Team lead, researcher, time manager, recorder, speaker.

Become a MultiGP Member

MultiGP is the worlds largest drone racing league.

MultiGP is the largest professional drone racing league in the world. Because of this, MultiGP hosts frequent competitive gatherings and casual events within its extensive network. The Organization currently has over 30,000 registered pilots in addition to 500 active chapters worldwide.

As a MultiGP STEM Alliance Member, Drones in School recommends that all advisors and students create a MultiGP account to join the larger drone racing community. MultiGP works to make drone racing fun, organized and rewarding for pilots, Chapter Organizers and spectators. Once you create an account, find a chapter near you and attend an event to begin learning more about drone racing!
