  • Foreshadowing is a literary technique where authors drop subtle hints or clues about future events in a story.

  • These hints can be found in various elements of the narrative, such as the work's title, dialogue, symbolism, character actions, or a descriptive setting.

  • By employing foreshadowing, writers create anticipation and intrigue, allowing readers to make predictions about what might happen next.

  • Suspense is the feeling of tension or excitement that readers experience when they are uncertain about the outcome of a story or situation

  • Authors use suspense to keep readers on the edge of their seats

  • This can be achieved through pacing, cliffhangers, and dramatic plot twists

  • We have seen suspense in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" and "The Finest Hours"

Close Read

Foreshadowing and suspense are created at the start of the story when the two parents discuss what might be wrong with their nursery and why they might need a psychologist's input. It foreshadows that there is a deeper issue with someone's mental state and that it is connected with children. Most readers will be curious about what this problem could be and how it relates to a nursery.

The title of "The Veldt" foreshadows the importance that the veldt will have on the story. Readers know not to discount any issues that occur there.

The line, "You know very well what he'd want," creates suspense because it establishes that there must be something unsettling in the nursery that both parents know a psychologist would like to see. The father, George, seems more reluctant to admit that there is a problem.
