When reading a drama it is key to remember that the purpose of the writing is to be performed.
Drama is one of the oldest genres of fiction!
What is a drama text?

All drama text tell a story using performers to act out the action and dialogue, but there are different 3 primary different types of drama texts.

Stage play: written to be performed live to an audience
Screen Play: written to be performed for television, film, etc.
Musical: (can be filmed or staged) includes music and dance in the performance of the drama

A drama text is written in a different format and uses different text features than a novel or essay written in paragraphs.

Drama Text Features
Cast of Characters - a brief list of the characters in the play and key info
Scene Headings - labels included to indicate the smaller parts within a play (similar to chapters in a novel) called scenes and acts. These labels also give key information about locations and time
Stage Direction - describes the action happening on stage and gives important visual/auditory information for the actors and director
Dialogue - what the characters of the drama are saying
