If you saw a plant beginning to wilt, what would you do to try and revive the plant?

Let's play a game!

I'm going to pull up whiteboards for everyone to use in a second. Once you have your whiteboard up, follow my directions. You are going to draw a flower according to what I say. We are seeing how well you can follow oral directions and if you know the 5 basic parts of a flower.

Get Ready!

1. Draw a black like across the center of the page.
2. Under the line, draw 5 lines, starting at the some point that represent roots of a plant. It doesn't matter what they look like as long as there are 5.
3. Using yellow, draw one big stem that leans slightly to the left.
4. Using green, add 4 leaves to the big stem. The leaves should be oval in shape.
5. Using blue, add 3 flowers to the ends of 3 leaves of your choice.
6. Since this is a pepper plant, add one fruit, or red pepper that is ready to be picked.

All Done! Let's take a look.

The Water Cycle

The water cycle moves water between the living and nonliving parts of Earth. Precipitation delivers water to Earth's surface, and evaporation returns water vapor to the atmosphere. Transpiration is another part of the water cycle, in which plants release water vapor into the atmosphere.

Which point represents transpiration?

10

Multiple Choice

How could rainfall be impacted by transpiration?

1

when trees are cut down, less rain fells in an area

2

when trees are cut down, more rain falls

3

when trees die, there's more rainfall

4

rainfall is not impacted by transpiration

Water!

Uses in Plants

  • perform photosynthesis;

  • carry nutrients throughout the plant; and

  • keep structures rigid.

Water is an important requirement to maintain homeostasis, or steady internal conditions, in plants.

Stomata and Cuticles

The cuticle helps the plant maintain homeostasis by preventing water loss. Recall that the cuticle is composed of lipids.

Lipids are water fearing, so water cannot pass through the waxy cuticle into the atmosphere. The cuticle ensures that water only exits the leaves through the stomata.

Cuticles: outer layer

Recall that stomata are openings in the leaves of plants. Cells on either side of the stoma control whether it is open or closed. When stomata are open, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor can flow into and out of a leaf.

On hot days, open stomata release a lot of water through transpiration. The reduction in water within the leaf creates pressure that draws new water up through the roots. If a plant loses more water from transpiration than it can get from the soil, it will wilt.

Multiple Choice

A nutrient is a substance that helps an organism to grow, develop, and survive. All living things require nutrients. You take in nutrients, such as carbohydrates, when you eat and drink. What nutrients do plants need?

1

water, carbon dioxide, and salt

2

any liquid, nitrogen, and oxygen

3

water, nitrogen, and phosphorous

What can we do to add nutrients back into soil? Any ideas?

17

Plant Residue, or detritus (de tri tus)

Detritus is organic matter made up of the decomposing remains of organisms and plants, and also of feces. It is composed of leaves and other plant parts, animal remains, waste products, and other organic debris that falls onto the soil or into bodies of water from surrounding communities. Detritus can also refer to loose fragments such as sand or gavel, that has been worn away from rock.

Light

Plants need light to perform photosynthesis. Plants store the energy from light in sugar that they use later for energy. Most plants get light from the Sun.

Experiment:

Technicians planted the same several types of lettuce in two identical aquaponic systems on the same day.

  • Both sets of lettuce received the same amount of water and grew for the same number of days.

  • Each setup received light from a different type of light fixture.

At the end of the experiment, technicians observed the size and health of the plants and compared the mass of lettuce harvested from each system.
